Singapore Recalls Everest Masala

According to a statement from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Thursday, the importer, Sp Muthiah and Sons Pvt Ltd, has been directed to recall the affected products.

The SFA stated that ethylene oxide is not authorized for use in food and is typically used to fumigate agricultural products to prevent microbial contamination.

"Under Singapore's Food Regulations, ethylene oxide is allowed to be used in the sterilisation of spices," the SFA clarified.

While the SFA noted that there is no immediate risk from consuming food contaminated with low levels of ethylene oxide, long-term exposure could potentially lead to health issues.

"There is no immediate risk to consumption of food. Therefore, exposure to this substance should be minimised as much as possible," the statement read.

Consumers who have purchased the affected products are advised not to consume them. Those who have already consumed the products and are concerned about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers can contact their point of purchase for further information, the SFA advised.

Everest has not yet responded to the recall notice.
