EU Passenger Cars: High Carbon Emissions Persist Despite Green Push

The European Court of Auditors raises concerns about the lack of progress in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from passenger cars in the European Union. Despite the push for a zero-emissions car fleet, conventional cars still dominate the market, with emissions remaining constant for diesel cars and marginally decreasing for petrol cars.

The European Union's (EU) auditing agency issued a warning on Wednesday, highlighting that most passenger cars within the 27-nation bloc continue to emit the same amount of carbon dioxide as they did 12 years ago. This concerning revelation underscores the urgent need for the EU to accelerate its transition towards a zero-emissions car fleet, with electric vehicles playing a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

Electric Vehicles Key to Reducing Emissions

Pietro Russo, the ECA member who led the audit, emphasized the critical importance of reducing the number of polluting vehicles on the road to achieve the EU's green revolution. However, he acknowledged the significant challenge that lies ahead, as a substantial reduction in cars' CO2 emissions will not occur as long as combustion engines remain prevalent. Electrifying the EU's car fleet is recognized as a major undertaking that requires substantial effort and commitment.

Conventional Cars' Emissions Remain Stagnant

According to the auditors' report, real emissions from conventional cars, which still account for nearly three-quarters of new vehicle registrations, have shown no signs of improvement. Diesel cars have maintained consistent emissions over the past decade, while petrol cars have experienced a marginal decrease of 4.6%. This lack of progress is attributed to the fact that technological advancements in engine efficiency are being offset by an increase in vehicle mass (approximately 10% on average) and more powerful engines (approximately 25% on average).

EU's Zero-Emissions Target for 2035

Despite these challenges, the EU remains committed to achieving its ambitious target of zero emissions for new passenger cars by 2035. This goal is crucial in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. However, the audit body emphasizes that carbon dioxide emissions from the transport sector have been steadily increasing over the past 30 years, with passenger cars accounting for more than half of these emissions in 2021.

Electric Vehicles Driving Emissions Reduction

The auditors' statement highlights the positive impact of electric vehicles in driving down average on-the-road CO2 emissions in recent years. While electric vehicles accounted for only 1 in every 100 new car registrations in 2018, their adoption has surged to nearly 1 in 7 in 2022. This significant increase in electric vehicle uptake has been instrumental in reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector.

The EU's continued reliance on conventional cars with high carbon emissions poses a significant obstacle to achieving its climate goals. To address this challenge, the bloc must accelerate its transition to a zero-emissions car fleet, with electric vehicles playing a central role in this transformation. By promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure, the EU can make substantial progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
