EU Announces USD 1.8 Billion Aid Package to Support Palestinian Authority and Fund Key Projects

The European Union has announced a financial aid package worth up to 1.6 billion euros (USD 1.8 billion) to assist the Palestinian Authority and fund initiatives in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza. This announcement coincides with Israel's intensified military actions in Gaza over the weekend.

EU Unveils USD 1.8 Billion Aid for Palestine

More than a third of this funding will be allocated as direct budget support to the Palestinian Authority over two years. The aim is to enhance financial sustainability, democratic governance, and service provision to foster private sector growth. "Our programme aims to support the Palestinian people in building a sustainable future," stated EU Mediterranean Commissioner Dubravka Šuica.

Support for Palestinian Governance

Šuica emphasised the importance of a well-functioning and reformed Palestinian Authority in governing Gaza post-conflict. She remarked, "It's about the governing capacity. It's about advancing economic recovery. It's about strengthening the resilience of the private sector." Her comments followed discussions in Luxembourg with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa.

In addition to direct budget support, over 576 million euros (USD 653 million) in grants will be directed towards various projects across Palestinian territories. These funds will target multiple sectors, aiming to bolster infrastructure and services.

Private Sector and Refugee Support

The private sector stands to gain from up to 400 million euros (USD 456 million) in low-cost loans provided by the EU, which is recognised as the largest aid donor to Palestinians globally. This financial assistance is intended to stimulate economic activity and development within the region.

A portion of the aid, amounting to 82 million euros (USD 93 million), will be allocated to the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees. This funding is crucial for supporting refugee services and addressing humanitarian needs.

This comprehensive financial package reflects the EU's commitment to supporting Palestinian governance and economic recovery efforts amidst ongoing regional challenges. The focus remains on fostering stability and sustainable development within Palestinian territories.
