Empowering Developing Nations
On the fringes of the pivotal COP28 event, Phatcharavat Wongsuwan, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, highlighted the chance for developing countries, like Thailand, to gain enhanced access to climate financing, innovative technologies, and knowledge-building resources. to combat climate change.

Food Security and Knowledge Sharing
Thailand, with its roots in agriculture, perceives COP28 as a strategic platform to disseminate and acquire expertise in crop diversification and resilient farming techniques that align with shifting weather patterns, thereby securing agricultural yields and food supply, Wongsuwan elaborated.
He extended his commendations to the United Arab Emirates for their leadership in the COP28 Presidency, noting the Conference's focus on a holistic approach that encompasses mitigation, adaptation, and tackling the repercussions of climate-related loss and damage.
Facilitating Energy Transition
Wongsuwan pointed out that the energy transition presents an opportunity for collaboration, where nations such as Thailand and the UAE can share and deliberate on policies, strategies, and readiness plans to address climate concerns.
Financial Support for Loss and Damage
The Deputy Prime Minister applauded the commitment of parties to financially kick-start the Loss and Damage fund's operations at COP28. He lauded the UAE's pledge of US$100 million, expressing hope that the fund would promptly aid vulnerable nations in counteracting the detrimental effects of climate change.
He also discussed Thailand's vulnerability to both abrupt and gradual climatic events, including sea-level rise and coastal erosion, underscoring their profound impact on the nation's socio-economic fabric.
Wongsuwan remains optimistic that developed countries will honor their pledges to assist developing counterparts in diminishing greenhouse gas emissions and bolstering resilience against climate adversities.
The Importance of the First Global Stocktake
The Deputy Prime Minister shed light on the first Global Stocktake (GST), an appraisal process set to measure the world's collective mitigation and adaptation efforts against the targets of the Paris Agreement. He stressed that the GST will be instrumental in pinpointing shortcomings, needs, and priorities to achieve the agreed climate goals.
Wongsuwan concluded by emphasizing the necessity of a transparent greenhouse gas tracking system under the UNFCCC, which accurately reflects strides in emissions reduction, as a crucial component in the global climate action framework.
In conclusion, the conversations and commitments at COP28 not only underpin the urgent need for a sustainable transformation but also reflect the growing consensus on shared responsibilities and mutual support to safeguard our planet.
