Elon Musk To Remove Block Feature On X (Twitter), Except For DMs
Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk disclosed on Friday his intention to remove the blocking feature on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), with the exception of direct messages. Musk criticised the blocking feature, stating it "makes no sense," and he believes it is often exploited to stifle voices. While Musk's announcement has generated diverse responses, some view it as a means to foster greater free speech on Twitter, while others express concern that it might foster a more hostile and unsafe environment.

The timeline for the implementation of Musk's plan to remove the blocking feature remains uncertain, yet it represents a significant alteration that could profoundly reshape the dynamics of Twitter.
Musk's statement was prompted by a query from a Tesla fan account, which questioned the rationale behind blocking as opposed to muting. Although some users have proposed that the blocking feature could be revamped to emulate the service's previous authentication system, often seen as a security measure, these suggestions have met resistance from worried users, according to TechCrunch.
Twitter addressed the matter by stating, "Twitter gives people a variety of tools to control their experience, including blocking," on its help page.
"Blocking helps people in restricting specific accounts from contacting them, seeing their Tweets, and following them. If you have been blocked by another account on Twitter, you can still block other accounts (including any that have blocked you)."
While the mute feature might persist, it is important to note that blocking and muting are not identical. Blocking effectively prevents other users from interacting with, viewing, or tracking your account, whereas muting simply conceals your posts from their feed. Users are not informed when they are muted. Musk has clarified that the blocking feature will remain intact for direct messages, as reported by TechCrunch.
Blocking has grown in significance for numerous users due to the rising volume of spam responses on their timelines. Previously, some users experienced backlash and found themselves banned from X Blue/Twitter Premium accounts when the feature began prioritizing their responses over those of non-paying users. Many public figures have also utilized this feature to combat harassment in their feeds.
The ultimate fate of this feature's deprecation remains uncertain, as Musk has reversed course before deployment in the past. Following his announcement to remove the service from light mode, he later backtracked, stating, "A lot of people have asked to keep light mode, so we will, but the default will be dark and dim will be deleted."
