Elon Musk Live-Streams Conversation with German Far-Right Leader Alice Weidel Before National Election
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, recently live-streamed a conversation with Alice Weidel, a leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This event, broadcast on his social media platform X, has sparked concerns about potential interference in Germany's upcoming national election. Musk openly endorsed the AfD, urging people to support the party. The discussion attracted over 190,000 viewers on X.

Musk's political involvement extends beyond Germany. He has previously supported AfD through articles and social media posts, criticising Germany's current government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Musk's actions have raised alarms across Europe, particularly regarding his influence on political matters. In Poland, there are fears he might interfere in their presidential election scheduled for May.
European Concerns Over Musk's Influence
The European Commission is closely monitoring Musk's activities on X. They have accused the platform of breaching the Digital Services Act, which aims to prevent misuse of social media for spreading illegal content and misinformation. Preliminary findings indicate that X's verification system is misleading and lacks transparency. The commission continues to investigate other potential violations.
In Germany, the AfD has gained popularity despite being under observation by domestic intelligence for suspected extremism. Mainstream parties have distanced themselves from the AfD, which was founded in 2013 and has since shifted further right. Initially opposing eurozone bailouts, the party gained traction by opposing Angela Merkel's refugee policies in 2015.
AfD's Growing Influence
Recent polls show the AfD as Germany's second-most popular party after mainstream conservatives. However, the Christian Democrats are still expected to win the election with 31% support compared to AfD's 20%. The AfD attributes its rise to dissatisfaction with Chancellor Scholz's coalition government and growing discontent with Germany's ties to the EU and NATO.
Musk has also made controversial statements outside of Germany. He called for the release of jailed UK extremist Tommy Robinson and labelled British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as an "evil tyrant." These actions have intensified scrutiny over Musk's political influence and intentions across Europe.
The AfD strongly rejects its extremist label, viewing it as a political move to undermine the party. Despite this, its popularity continues to grow amid frustrations with Germany's current government and international alliances perceived as compromising national sovereignty.
As Europe's political landscape evolves, Musk's involvement raises questions about the role of influential figures in shaping public opinion and electoral outcomes. His actions highlight the complex interplay between technology, politics, and media in today's interconnected world.
