Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.8 Hits Afghanistan, Shakes Hindu Kush Region

A strong earthquake struck Afghanistan's rugged Hindu Kush region on Friday. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 5.8-magnitude tremor occurred roughly 130 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of Kabul.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.

People in Bamiyan and Wardak provinces, located to the west of the capital, reported feeling the tremors, AFP said.

Afghanistan frequently experiences earthquakes, especially along the Hindu Kush range, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, making the region highly seismically active.

Previous Major Earthquakes in Afghanistan

In August 2025, a shallow earthquake measuring 6.0 in magnitude devastated villages in eastern Afghanistan, claiming more than 2,200 lives.

Shortly after that, a 6.3-magnitude quake struck northern parts of the country, leaving at least 27 people dead.

Earlier, powerful earthquakes in Herat province near the Iranian border in 2023 and in Nangarhar province in 2022 resulted in hundreds of fatalities and widespread destruction of homes.
