Bengaluru Karaga 2026: 26-km Midnight Procession Draws Lakhs as Tradition, Devotion Light Up City

The Bengaluru Karaga festival reached its peak early Thursday when Chief Priest Gnanendra Swamy carried the sacred Karaga in a 26-km midnight procession across central parts of the city, drawing lakhs of devotees, showcasing elaborate decorations, and reinforcing the festival's tradition of interfaith harmony.

The procession began around 1 am from the historic Dharmaraya Swamy Temple, with nearly 5,000 Veerakumaras accompanying the priest. Devotees lined the streets through the night as the Karaga moved along OTC Road, Avenue Road, Cotton Pet, Mysuru Bank Circle, Kumbarpet and Tigalarapet, offering darshan to thousands gathered along the route.

This year, the festival witnessed enhanced visual appeal with extensive floral arrangements covering both the inner sanctum and temple surroundings. For the first time, major locations including the Greater Bengaluru Authority head office, Dasappa Hospital and nearby areas were illuminated, expanding the festive atmosphere beyond the temple precincts.

A significant moment during the procession was its entry into the Tawakkal Mastan Shah Dargah at Cotton Pet, where members of Hindu and Muslim communities came together in a symbolic gesture of unity. Religious leaders exchanged greetings, and local residents offered flowers and fruits to the priest carrying the Karaga, continuing a long-standing tradition of communal harmony.

The procession also halted at the Anjaneya Swamy temple for Ganapathi Puja before continuing its route. Authorities deployed police personnel across Central and West divisions to manage crowds and ensure security, as large numbers of devotees participated in the overnight celebrations.

With its blend of devotion, heritage and inclusivity, the Bengaluru Karaga once again transformed the city into a vibrant cultural spectacle, drawing widespread participation and reaffirming its place as one of the region's most significant traditional events.
