Is a dry day in Tamil Nadu on April 3 in view of Good Friday? Questions have resurfaced over whether liquor sales will be restricted across the state on the occasion.

Good Friday is observed as a government holiday, and over the years, there have been repeated demands from sections of the Christian community to declare it a statewide dry day. Organisations such as the Amalorpava Maathaa Mathuvilaku Sabai, based in the Thoothukudi-Tuticorin region, have actively campaigned for this change.

The group, known for its anti-alcohol and de-addiction initiatives since 1922, has even served a legal notice to the Tamil Nadu government seeking official recognition of Good Friday as a dry day.

In its petition under the Civil Procedure Code earlier, the organisation had argued that excluding Good Friday from the list of notified dry days goes against principles of secularism and equality, especially when other religious and national occasions are granted such status. Similar representations have been made in previous years as well, with support from some political leaders who have highlighted what they describe as uneven treatment of religious observances.

Despite these appeals, official dry day lists released by state authorities and TASMAC for 2026 include occasions such as Thiruvalluvar Day, Mahavir Jayanthi and select other events, but do not feature Good Friday. Past trends too indicate that the day has not automatically triggered liquor restrictions across Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, separate restrictions are set to be enforced later in April and early May in connection with the election schedule. As per directions from the Election Commission of India, liquor sales will be suspended for a defined period to ensure smooth polling and counting processes. The closure will begin at 10:00 AM on April 21 and continue until midnight on April 23, covering the polling day. Another restriction will be in place on May 4, when votes are counted.

In conclusion, Good Friday is not a dry day in Tamil Nadu, although temporary dry days will be observed later due to elections.
