Earthquake In Russia: Kamchatka Peninsula Jolted By 7.4 Magnitude Tremors; Tsunami Alert Issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday, prompting a tsunami warning across coastal areas. The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake occurred at 0849 GMT, with the epicentre located 144 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 20 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued an alert for possible hazardous tsunami waves within a 300-km radius of the quake's epicentre. The Kamchatka region, home to around 180,000 people, is highly prone to seismic activity due to the convergence of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.

After the main shock, several significant aftershocks were recorded, including tremors of magnitude 6.7 and 6.6. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been released.

Kamchatka has experienced multiple high-magnitude earthquakes in the past. Since 1900, at least seven quakes of 8.3 or higher have struck the region.

Emergency authorities remain on alert, and monitoring continues.
