Earthquake In Pakistan: National Center for Seismology Reports 4.2 Magnitude Tremors
Earthquake in Pakistan: People of Pakistan felt strong tremors on Monday afternoon as an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit the area near Kumrat Valley. As per the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred around 4:00 pm (IST). This incident is part of a series of tremors that have been felt across the country, highlighting its vulnerability to seismic activities due to its geographical positioning.
Pakistan's location at the juncture of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates subjects it to frequent seismic disturbances, making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world. The region's seismic history is marked by numerous earthquakes, with varying magnitudes that have consistently posed risks to its inhabitants.

In 2024, the country witnessed a significant increase in seismic activities, with around 167 earthquakes recorded. These earthquakes, with magnitudes of 1.5 or greater, varied from minor to moderate in intensity. The bulk of these seismic events was concentrated in the northern and western parts of Pakistan, particularly in areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan.
Among these numerous seismic occurrences, a few stood out due to their intensity and the extent of their impact. In September, an earthquake of 5.7 magnitude rattled Islamabad along with parts of Punjab and KP, while November saw a 5.2 magnitude tremor affecting Peshawar and its surrounding regions. Furthermore, March 2023 was marked by a significant 6.5 magnitude quake in Badakhshan, whose tremors were felt across northern Pakistan. This event caused casualties and damage, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, underscoring the substantial seismic risk in these areas.
