What Is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus, primarily spread through mosquito bites, can cause various symptoms. While most infected individuals do not exhibit any symptoms, approximately 20% may develop fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, or rash, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In about 1 in 150 cases, the virus can lead to a severe and sometimes fatal illness.

West Nile virus (WNV), a flavivirus transmitted primarily by mosquitoes, can lead to severe neurological diseases and is endemic across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and West Asia. While about 80% of infected individuals remain asymptomatic, the virus can cause serious illness in a small percentage of cases, particularly in people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems.

Initially identified in Uganda in 1937, WNV has since caused major outbreaks globally, including a significant one in the U.S. in 1999. No vaccine is available for humans, making preventive measures against mosquito bites crucial. Vaccines exist for horses, and effective control relies on mosquito surveillance and public awareness.

Anthony Fauci On Recovery

Dr. Jonathan LaPook, CBS News' chief medical correspondent, shared on social media that Fauci likely contracted the virus from a mosquito bite in his backyard. Fauci was admitted to the hospital about ten days ago after experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, and severe fatigue, and he spent a week in the hospital before returning home.

Fauci, who served as the chief White House medical adviser during the COVID-19 pandemic, became a prominent figure due to his role in managing the crisis. His tenure made him a trusted voice for many but also drew partisan criticism. After leaving government service in 2022, Fauci returned to testify before Congress in June as part of the Republican investigation into the origins of COVID-19 and the US response.

Last summer, Fauci joined Georgetown University as a distinguished university professor. Despite his current health setback, there are no vaccines or specific treatments for West Nile virus. As of August 20, the CDC had reported 216 cases across 33 states this year, emphasizing that prevention through avoiding mosquito bites remains crucial.
