Donald Trump suggests jail time for those who burn the American flag
Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag, Donald Trump tweeted
Washington, Nov 29: US President elect Donald Trump has indicated that those burning the American flag can face strict punishment including jail time.
"Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do, there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!" Trump tweeted.

However, the US Supreme Court said that burning the flag was a form of free speech. It not clear though what prompted Trump to tweet the statement.
The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag-burning is "expressive conduct" protected by the First Amendment.
Local media reports point to the possibility that he could be referring to the recent burning of a flag at Amherst University in Massachusetts on November 10 as part of a student protest after his election victory two days before.
