Doklam standoff: Worry of accidental escalation looms large

The Chinese media has spoken about war several times amidst the Doklam standoff. India however is sure that it is nothing more than a rhetoric and China will not risk a war.

Top sources in New Delhi tell OneIndia that all the talk in the Chinese media is being viewed by India as a rhetoric. China is trying to pressurise India to withdraw troops at Doklam. However India has maintained that it will not pull out of Doklam first. It is a two way street and if there is to be a solution then both sides would have to withdraw simultaneously, the official noted.

However going by the developments it is clear that both sides want a face saving exercise. This is not about chest thumping said the official while adding that if at all it comes down to a battle, India is well prepared to take on the Chinese.

Top Indian officials have analysed the situation carefully since the past 50 days and have found that China is not interested or cannot afford a war. China is yet to take a reconciliatory approach on the issue. India has however made it clear that it would not be the first mover in the issue whether it comes to war or a pull out.

India would look at a couple of solutions if China is ready to talk. While back channel talks are yet to be opened up, Indian officials say that they are ready to negotiate, provided China makes the first move.

India is ready for a couple of options to end the standoff. The first would be a mutual troop withdrawal. The second would be a re-adjustment. Lastly India would like the Bhutan troops to be stationed at Doklam.

Analysts say that the war rhetoric is not good for both sides. It is however clear that both sides would not engage in a war. However the only worry is about an accidental escalation, analysts state.
