India-Mauritania Cooperation Potential

President Murmu pointed out that India could assist Mauritania's development in sectors like human resources, infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, skill development, and digital innovation. She told the Indian community, "You are all an important part of this process of collaboration." The president also noted cultural similarities between the two nations, such as shared values and traditions.

The Indian presence in Mauritania is evident across various sectors, including mining, power, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas exploration, construction, and agro-industry. Most Indians work as expatriates in both Indian and foreign companies. Some are employed by the UN and other multilateral organisations. The Indian Embassy in Nouakchott estimates around 150 Indians reside in Mauritania.

Trade Relations Between India and Mauritania

India's primary exports to Mauritania include cereals, pharmaceuticals, plastic products, cotton, ceramics, iron and steel articles, boilers, mechanical appliances, electrical goods, chemical products, and non-railway vehicles. Conversely, Mauritania exports iron and steel, copper, aluminium, and electrical machinery to India. These trade relations highlight the economic ties between the two countries.

Upon her arrival at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy Airport, President Murmu was welcomed by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani with a ceremonial reception. Later on her visit, she met with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mauritania. Her office stated that this historic state visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

Murmu expressed her delight at being among the vibrant Indian diaspora in Mauritania. "It is indeed a pleasure and an honour for me to be present in Mauritania today," she said. The Indian community's contributions to both nations were acknowledged during her address. The president's visit follows a successful trip to Algeria where she engaged with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to enhance bilateral relations.

Mauritania possesses abundant natural resources crucial for India's expanding industries. After concluding her visit to Mauritania, President Murmu will proceed to Malawi for the final leg of her African tour.
