Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Utilises State Resources to Oppose Abortion Rights Amendment

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has shifted his focus from hurricane updates to opposing an abortion rights amendment in Florida. Recently, he organised a rally, resembling a campaign event, funded by the state. This occurred two weeks before the election. The rally concluded with a prayer led by Miami's archbishop and a call from the lieutenant governor urging attendees not to vote like atheists.

During the event, DeSantis emphasised the permanence of constitutional amendments. "When you're dealing with constitutional amendments your default should always be no," he stated. "You can always alter normal policies and legislation. Once it's in the constitution, that's forever. You really have zero chance of ever changing it." His remarks were met with applause from doctors opposing the amendment.

Legal Controversy Surrounding Amendment 4

John Wilson, formerly the top lawyer for the Department of Health, revealed that he resigned after being pressured to send letters threatening legal action against TV stations airing pro-Amendment 4 ads. He signed an affidavit stating that lawyers for DeSantis drafted these letters under his name. A judge recently blocked further actions against these stations.

The group Floridians Protecting Freedom filed a lawsuit against the state's communications with TV stations. "This affidavit exposes state interference at the highest level," said Lauren Brenzel, director of the Yes on 4 campaign. "Their extreme attacks on Amendment 4 are an anti-democratic tactic."

Amendment 4: A Nationwide Issue

The ballot measure is one of nine similar initiatives across the United States but has become the most expensive campaign so far. According to AdImpact, ads related to this measure have cost approximately $160 million. The amendment requires 60% voter approval to pass and would override existing state law banning most abortions after six weeks.

The DeSantis administration has actively opposed this measure. At Monday's event, DeSantis received cheers for criticising the amendment, but Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez received even louder applause. Nunez expressed her religious stance on the issue, saying, "We cannot go to church and pray like Christians and turn around and vote like atheists," which prompted a standing ovation.

Criticism of Government Resource Use

A group critical of DeSantis condemned using government resources for the No on 4 event. Anders Croy from DeSantis Watch stated, "DeSantis continued his weaponisation of state government against his own constituents by coordinating a taxpayer-funded press conference with the political campaign opposing Amendment 4 in his quest to silence the voices of doctors and patients suffering under Florida's extreme abortion ban."

The event concluded with a prayer from Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami. He prayed for Floridians to cherish human life: "We pray ... that you awaken in every heart of the citizens of this great state of Florida reverence for the work of your hands and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of human life."
