Death Toll in Mayotte from Cyclone Chido Estimated to Reach Several Hundred, Officials Warn

The French territory of Mayotte has been severely impacted by Cyclone Chido, with the death toll potentially reaching thousands, according to Mayotte Prefect François-Xavier Bieuville. France has dispatched rescue teams and supplies to assist the impoverished Indian Ocean region, which has experienced extensive destruction. Bieuville described the cyclone as the worst to hit Mayotte in 90 years, causing significant damage to infrastructure and power outages.

Cyclone Chido Causes Hundreds of Deaths in Mayotte

Impact on Mayotte's Infrastructure

The cyclone struck Mayotte with winds exceeding 220 kph (136 mph), classifying it as a category 4 storm. The French Interior Ministry reported at least 11 deaths and over 250 injuries, with expectations that these numbers will rise. The cyclone's devastation was particularly severe in areas with informal housing. Bieuville expressed skepticism about the official death toll, stating, "This figure is not plausible when you see the images of the slums."

Chido also affected Comoros and Madagascar before making landfall in Mozambique. Concerns have been raised for over 2 million people in northern Mozambique who could be impacted. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with Mayotte's residents, while Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau planned a visit to assess the damage.

Efforts to Aid Mayotte

France aims to establish an air and sea bridge from Reunion to Mayotte to facilitate aid delivery. Patrice Latron, Reunion's prefect, announced plans to send approximately 800 additional rescuers and over 80 tons of supplies. Restoring electricity and water access are top priorities. Military aircraft are currently the only means of transport due to damage at Mayotte's airport.

In response to potential looting, 1,600 police and gendarmerie officers have been deployed. Many areas in Mayotte have seen entire neighborhoods flattened, with residents reporting widespread power outages and environmental destruction. Chad Youyou, a resident of Hamjago, shared videos online showing extensive damage in his community.

Chido's Path Through Mozambique

Cyclone Chido continued its path into northern Mozambique, causing further destruction. UNICEF reported significant damage in Cabo Delgado province, affecting homes, schools, and health facilities. Authorities warned of potential landslides and communities being cut off from essential services for weeks.

The cyclone season in this region runs from December through March, with recent years witnessing a series of intense storms. Cyclone Idai in 2019 resulted in over 1,300 deaths across Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. Last year, Cyclone Freddy claimed more than 1,000 lives across several countries.

Climate change is believed to be intensifying these cyclones, exacerbating humanitarian crises in vulnerable African nations that contribute minimally to global warming. These countries continue to call for increased support from wealthier nations to address climate change impacts effectively.

Mayotte's recovery will require substantial international assistance due to the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Chido. The situation underscores the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing climate-related challenges faced by poorer regions worldwide.
