Cyprus Ready to Ship Humanitarian Aid to Gaza via Maritime Corridor
Cyprus is ready to immediately begin shipping large quantities of humanitarian aid to Gaza in vessels that can navigate shallow water once conditions on the ground allow for it, President Nikos Christodoulides said Monday.
Nicosia, Cyprus: Cyprus stands ready to swiftly dispatch substantial humanitarian aid shipments to Gaza through vessels capable of navigating shallow waters, as soon as the conditions on the ground permit, declared the President of the eastern Mediterranean island nation on Monday. President Nikos Christodoulides stated that his nation's proposal for a maritime corridor stretching from the Cypriot port of Larnaca to Gaza is currently the sole viable solution under international consideration to significantly enhance the limited aid entering the enclave via Egypt's Rafah border checkpoint.
Planning for the Maritime Corridor

The planning phase for the roughly 230-mile (370-kilometer) corridor is nearing completion, and aid delivery can commence as soon as a ceasefire is declared, Christodoulides noted. The Cypriot leader, who has been in regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the proposal, acknowledged that obtaining approval to initiate the shipments involves intricate negotiations in light of the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza.
Support from the International Community
Christodoulides highlighted the widespread international support for the initiative, stating, "Everyone supports this initiative, the European Union, the United States. When we say that we're a bridge to the region, we're showing this in practice. It's very important for our country." Notably, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat expressed Israel's explicit endorsement of the project, indicating that relevant ministries and agencies in Israel are currently exploring its feasibility, although without specifying a timeline for the corridor's opening.
Addressing Security Concerns
Following Israel's imposition of a siege on Gaza and declaration of war against the ruling Hamas militants, aid organizations have reported that civilians lack sufficient food and clean water, while hospitals face shortages of even basic medical supplies. The Israeli government's reluctance to allow aid into Gaza stems from concerns that Hamas might divert the shipments, thereby prolonging the group's survival. To address these security apprehensions, Cyprus has invited authorities from Israel, the U.S., and other European countries to collaborate with Cypriot agents in thoroughly inspecting all shipments, ensuring that nothing can be used by Hamas against Israel.
Immediate and Long-Term Plans
In the immediate term, shallow-draft vessels will be utilized to transport the aid, and Cyprus is coordinating with Gulf countries that possess such ships. President Christodoulides emphasized the urgency of being fully prepared to commence operations as soon as the situation on the ground allows. The medium-term plan involves the construction of a floating dock off Gaza, enabling various types of ships to offload assistance. In the long run, the vision is to develop a full-fledged port in Gaza.
Benefits of Using the Port of Larnaca
According to Christodoulides, utilizing the port of Larnaca for loading cargo offers several advantages. The port has ample facilities for storing aid, and its proximity to the island's main airport and a U.S.-funded facility dedicated to training personnel from Cyprus and neighboring countries in port and maritime security further enhances its suitability. While medicine, food, clothing, and other essentials collected at the port will continuously flow into Gaza, it is important to note that the aid corridor will be one-way, meaning that no Palestinians will be permitted to leave the enclave using these ships.
Distribution of Aid and Conclusion
The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees will oversee the distribution of aid reaching Gaza, leveraging its established network. President Christodoulides' proposal for a maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza presents a feasible and timely solution to significantly increase the flow of humanitarian assistance into the besieged enclave. With the support of the international community and meticulous planning, Cyprus stands ready to play a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza.
