Cyprus Pursues NATO Membership as President Christodoulides Discusses Military Upgrades with US Support
Cyprus is considering NATO membership after its military receives training and equipment from the US, according to President Nikos Christodoulides. This move could shift Cyprus from its long-standing neutral stance, a policy dating back to the Cold War when it balanced relations between Washington and Moscow. The president's comments follow his recent meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Cyprus' Strategic Military Upgrades
Christodoulides emphasised the importance of enhancing Cyprus' military capabilities with US support. "Because we don’t want the National Guard to lose such opportunities, we’re in talks with the US — and we thank them for their positive response — on how the Cyprus Republic can make the best use of these opportunities, so when everything is in its place, the Cyprus Republic can become a member state of NATO," he stated. The island's strategic location near the Middle East has prompted plans for military infrastructure upgrades.
Turkey's presence in northern Cyprus complicates matters. Turkey, which has over 35,000 troops in the Turkish Cypriot north, does not recognise the Greek Cypriot government. The UN is working to restart peace talks between the two sides, divided since Turkey's 1974 invasion following a coup aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece.
US and EU Defence Collaborations
Cyprus is negotiating with the US to upgrade a key air base and with the EU for improvements to a naval base. The Andreas Papandreou air base currently hosts US Marines and V-22 Osprey aircraft, ready for potential evacuations from Lebanon. Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus' commitment to strengthening defence ties with both the US and NATO.
Turkey strongly opposes any Cypriot bid for NATO membership. According to Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency, unnamed officials from Turkey's Defence Ministry described such a move as "an unacceptable development for Turkey," potentially disrupting peace efforts and affecting negotiations.
Christodoulides did not specify how Turkish objections might be addressed. However, he stressed that upgrading Cyprus' deterrent capabilities is crucial. "The strengthening of the Cyprus Republic’s deterrent capabilities is of the utmost importance, and we take advantage of every opportunity, both in the direction of the United States and NATO, but also the European Union," he added.
Cyprus' potential NATO membership remains uncertain due to Turkey's likely opposition. However, ongoing discussions with international partners aim to enhance its military readiness. As Cyprus navigates these complex geopolitical dynamics, its focus remains on bolstering defence capabilities while seeking peaceful resolutions to longstanding regional tensions.
