Cypriot authorities, in partnership with Europol, successfully executed a sting operation, codenamed Operational Task Force Limassol, leading to the dismantling of an international criminal network involved in facilitating illegal immigration and residency through sham marriages. The operation resulted in the arrest of 13 suspects, including the alleged masterminds, across Cyprus, Portugal, and Lithuania.

Nicosia, Cyprus - Cypriot authorities, in collaboration with Europol, have successfully dismantled an international criminal network involved in facilitating illegal immigration and residency in European Union (EU) countries through sham marriages.

Sham Marriage Ring Exposed: Cyprus Takes Down International Immigration Racket

Modus Operandi

The criminal ring orchestrated dozens of sham marriages on the Mediterranean island nation, involving women from Portugal and Lithuania and men from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. These marriages served as a means to circumvent immigration laws and gain illegal entry into EU countries.

Scope of the Operation

The ring's activities extended beyond sham marriages, encompassing a range of associated illegal practices. These included the circulation of forged documents and assistance in illegal entry into the country.

Joint Sting Operation

In a coordinated effort, police forces from Cyprus, Portugal, and Lithuania launched a joint sting operation dubbed "Operational Task Force Limassol" on January 29. Simultaneous searches were conducted in targeted residences, resulting in the arrest of 13 suspects in Cyprus, one in Portugal, and another in Lithuania.

Masterminds Apprehended

Cypriot authorities identified four of the arrested individuals as the masterminds behind the criminal network. Two of them, aged 37 and 24, were apprehended in Cyprus, while the other two, aged 45 and 46, were taken into custody abroad based on European arrest warrants.

Legal Proceedings

A Cyprus court ruled on Wednesday to keep the 13 suspects in custody until February 7. Meanwhile, extradition proceedings are underway to bring the remaining two suspects, currently in Portuguese and Lithuanian custody, to Cyprus.

Europol's Role

Europol played a pivotal role in coordinating the sting operation, providing both funding and intelligence support to the participating law enforcement agencies.

The successful dismantling of this international sham marriage ring highlights the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies across multiple countries to combat illegal immigration and related criminal activities.
