Delays Mar Congos Presidential Election, Raising Concerns
The Democratic Republic of Congos presidential election faced significant delays, leading to an extension of voting. Logistical obstacles and security challenges, including conflict-related displacement, impacted millions of voters, raising questions about the credibility of the electoral process.
Kinshasa, Congo - The Democratic Republic of Congo's presidential election on Wednesday encountered significant delays, prompting an extension of voting due to logistical and security challenges. The West African nation grappled with issues that raised questions about the credibility of the electoral process.

Extension of Voting
The election commission announced that voting would continue until every registered voter had the opportunity to cast their ballot, leaving uncertainty about whether balloting would extend into Thursday. Approximately 44 million people, nearly half of the country's population, were eligible to vote. However, many faced difficulties in exercising their right, including several million displaced by conflicts in the vast country's eastern region. The fighting prevented 1.5 million people from registering to vote.
Significance of the Election
At stake is the future of one of Africa's largest nations, rich in mineral resources that play a crucial role in the global economy. Congo's history of disputed elections, some of which turned violent, has eroded confidence in the country's institutions among many Congolese citizens.
Concerns Over Extension
The decision to extend voting raised concerns despite the election commission's efforts to enhance the credibility of the process by investing over $1 billion in recent years. Opposition candidate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege rejected the extension, asserting that the results of such a chaotic vote would not reflect the will of the people.
Key Candidates
President Felix Tshisekedi is seeking a second and final five-year term, facing competition from 26 other candidates. His main rival appears to be Moise Katumbi, a former governor of Katanga province and a wealthy businessman.
Logistical Issues
Voters faced challenges such as illegible voting cards due to smudged ink, raising concerns about potential disenfranchisement. Additionally, the voter registration list lacked proper auditing, further complicating the voting process.
Three hours after polls opened, over 31% of polling stations in major cities and towns remained closed, and voting machines malfunctioned in 45% of stations, according to Bishop Donatien Nshole, the spokesman for the National Episcopal Conference of Congo and the Church of Christ in Congo observer mission. These figures were based on reports from approximately one-fifth of the mission's extensive network.
Some polling stations, particularly in remote areas, still lacked essential materials, contributing to the delays. Election officials attributed the problems to technical issues, including faulty machines and insufficient training of election officials.
Allegations of Voter Fraud
Allegations of voter fraud emerged in parts of Équateur province, where over 7,000 ballots were reportedly marked illegally before voting, according to Bishop Donatien Nshole of the local observer mission.
In eastern Congo, voters expressed frustration at not finding their names on the voting lists.
Challenges for Displaced Persons
Displaced individuals faced barriers to voting, including difficulties in obtaining new voter cards. This situation left many feeling disheartened and discriminated against.
Incidents of Violence
Isolated incidents of violence occurred, including an angry crowd attempting to push past police officers in riot gear at one polling station. In the city of Bunia, a voting centre was vandalised during a dispute between the electoral commission and voters. Gunshots in the area further disrupted the voting process.
Opposition's Call for Vigilance
Opposition candidate Katumbi urged the population to remain at polling stations and monitor the results until the end, emphasising that only the results displayed at each polling station would be accepted.
Tshisekedi's Favourable Position
A fractured opposition increases the likelihood of Tshisekedi's victory, as there is no runoff vote. Tshisekedi, the son of a popular opposition figure, has focused on consolidating power over state institutions and addressing the legitimacy crisis that arose from a contested election five years ago.
Ongoing Conflict in the East
The eastern region of Congo continues to grapple with violence as more than 120 armed groups vie for power, resources, and community protection. Despite Tshisekedi's promise to curb the violence, the withdrawal of an East African force and the UN peacekeeping mission has created uncertainty. A cease-fire brokered by the United States in the region was extended from 72 hours to two weeks, and residents reported that it appeared to be holding.
Concerns Over Transparency
Observers have raised concerns about the transparency of the electoral process. The East African Community's election observer mission was denied access to Congo, and the European Union cancelled its mission due to the authorities' refusal to authorise the use of satellite equipment.
