Claudia Goldin Awarded Nobel Prize In Economics For Work On Women's Contribution To Labour Market

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for 2023 was awarded to Professor Claudia Goldin. The Swedish Academy announced that Goldin had been honored with the Nobel Prize for her comprehensive research on women's contribution to the labour market. This recognition marked Goldin as the 55th laureate of the prize, which was first instituted in 1969.

The Academy specified that the focus of this year's award is women's roles in the labor market. Notably, Goldin, who serves as a professor at Harvard University, made history by becoming the third woman to ever receive the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences on that Monday.

Earlier, Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, and Philip Dybvig were jointly honored with the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for their research on the dynamics of banks and financial crises. The Nobel Prize and the Economic Sciences Prize had been bestowed 615 times to a total of 989 recipients, including both individuals and organizations, until the year 2022. With this year's Nobel Prizes announced in the fields of Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace, the overall count of laureates reached 999. The addition of the Economic Sciences Prize brought the total to 1,000. To date, the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences has been conferred upon 93 individuals, with just three of them being women. The youngest recipient of the Prize was 46 years old, while the oldest was 90 at the time of receiving the award.

Notably, Amartya Sen and Abhijit Banerjee are two economists of Indian origin who received this prestigious recognition in 1998 and 2019, respectively. Sen was honored for his significant contributions to the field of welfare economics, whereas Banerjee, along with his economist spouse Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, was jointly awarded the Prize for pioneering an innovative experimental approach to combat global poverty.
