Rare Churchill Portrait by Artist He Disliked Up for Auction

A portrait of Winston Churchill, crafted by Graham Sutherland, an artist not favored by the British leader, was unveiled at Churchill's birthplace, Blenheim Palace, before its upcoming auction in June. This piece, a preparatory study for a more extensive portrait that Churchill famously disliked to the extent of destruction, has now emerged to tell its tale. The artwork is set to be auctioned at Sotheby's in London on June 6, with an estimated value between £500,000 and £800,000 ($622,000 and $995,000).

Churchills Disliked Portrait Auction

In 1954, to commemorate Churchill's 80th birthday, Sutherland was tasked by the Houses of Parliament to create a portrait of Churchill. The full-length piece was later criticized by Churchill himself for portraying him in an unflattering light. This dissatisfaction led to the artwork's disappearance, later revealed by the Churchill family to have been destroyed. This incident was dramatized in "The Crown," showcasing a fictional account of the painting's destruction.

Andre Zlattinger, Sotheby's head of modern British and Irish art, commented on the significance of the surviving study. He noted that it captures Churchill in a moment of reflective thoughtfulness, adding depth to the narrative of a man deeply concerned with his legacy and public image. The painting is currently on display at Blenheim Palace, where visitors can view it until Sunday. Following this, it will be exhibited at Sotheby's offices in New York from May 3-16 and in London from May 25-June 5.

The unveiling at Blenheim Palace marks a poignant moment, bringing the artwork back to Churchill's place of birth 150 years ago. This exhibition not only offers a glimpse into Churchill's complex relationship with his portrayal but also highlights a significant piece of art history intertwined with British political heritage.
