China and Maldives Forge Closer Ties: Agreements, Tourism, and Research Vessels

Seeking New Berthing Options

The visit coincided with the Maldives government's permission for the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 to berth at Male. China has been seeking new avenues to berth its research ships, which frequently conduct surveillance missions in the Indian Ocean, after Sri Lanka banned them for a year due to concerns expressed by India.

Deepening Cooperation

During the visit, the Chinese delegation and Maldivian officials agreed to deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Sun's meeting with President Muizzu focused on exploring ways to promptly implement the agreements signed during the President's recent state visit to China.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Sun expressed interest in strengthening strategic bilateral relations and offering training opportunities for Maldivians in various fields. President Muizzu, who is considered pro-China, signed 20 agreements during his recent China visit, primarily focusing on infrastructure and housing projects. The Chinese government also announced a USD 130 million grant to the Maldives during the visit.

Boosting Tourism

President Muizzu requested China to increase the number of Chinese tourists visiting the Maldives by increasing flights. Chinese tourists currently rank third in terms of arrivals to the Maldives, after India and Russia.

The visit of the Chinese delegation to the Maldives highlights the growing cooperation between the two countries. The implementation of the signed agreements and the potential increase in Chinese tourists are expected to further strengthen the relationship between China and the Maldives.
