China Denies Major HMPV Flu Surge, Confirms Travel Safety
China on Friday downplayed reports of a massive flu outbreak overwhelming hospitals, stating that cases of respiratory illnesses this winter are less severe than the previous year. The Chinese Foreign Ministry assured that it remains safe for foreigners to travel to the country.
"Respiratory infections typically peak during winter in the northern hemisphere," said Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, in response to media queries about the spread of influenza A and other respiratory diseases in China.

Despite videos circulating on social media depicting overcrowded hospitals, Mao emphasized, "The diseases appear to be less severe and are spreading on a smaller scale compared to last year. I can assure you that the Chinese government prioritizes the health of both its citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel here."
Mao also highlighted preventive measures outlined in guidelines issued by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration of China for managing respiratory diseases during winter.
Reports of a significant flu outbreak in China have gained attention internationally, particularly in India and Indonesia, over the past few days. However, health officials maintain that the situation reflects an annual winter trend, coinciding with the severe cold weather China has been experiencing for several months.
