China: 40,000 people evacuated as typhoon approaches Hainan
Beijing, June 22: Over 40,000 people have been relocated from China's Hainan province as the year's first typhoon is likely to it the area late Monday.
Typhoon Kujira will sweep over the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea before hitting land somewhere between Wanning on Hainan and Zhanjiang in neighbouring Guangdong province, media reported.
Although the typhoon should help ease a severe drought, state media said.
Fishermen have also been called back to harbour and schools have been asked to remain closed on Tuesday in the provincial capital, Haikou.

The typhoon is expected to weaken gradually after reaching land.
Typhoons are common at this time of year in the South China Sea, picking up strength from the warm waters and dissipating over land.
