Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Scheduled to Take Effect on Sunday Morning Amid Hostage Concerns

The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is set to commence on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. local time, as announced by mediator Qatar. Families of hostages in Gaza are anxiously awaiting news, while Palestinians prepare for the release of detainees. Humanitarian groups are also gearing up to deliver aid. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the ceasefire will not proceed unless Israel receives the list of hostages to be freed, as previously agreed.

Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Starts Sunday

Israeli airstrikes continued on Saturday, with Gaza's Health Ministry reporting 23 bodies brought to hospitals within 24 hours. "What is this truce that kills us hours before it begins?" questioned Abdallah Al-Aqad, whose sister died in an airstrike in Khan Younis. Health officials confirmed the deaths of a couple and their two children, aged 2 and 7. Meanwhile, sirens blared across central and southern Israel due to intercepted projectiles from Yemen.

Ceasefire Details and Hostage Exchange

The initial phase of the ceasefire will last 42 days, with more challenging negotiations set to start after two weeks. During this period, Israel's security Cabinet will decide on future actions. The plan involves releasing 33 hostages from Gaza over six weeks in exchange for 737 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. The exchange is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. local time on Sunday.

According to the ceasefire plan approved by Israel's Cabinet, three living female hostages will be returned on Day 1, four on Day 7, and the remaining 26 over the next five weeks. Palestinian prisoners will be released after hostages have safely arrived. Additionally, 1,167 Gaza residents uninvolved in the October 7 attack will be freed during this phase.

Humanitarian Efforts and Aid Delivery

Gaza is expected to receive a significant increase in food, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid. Trucks were seen lined up on Friday at the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing into Gaza. On Saturday, two Egyptian government ministers arrived in northern Sinai to oversee preparations for delivering aid through Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings.

The ceasefire plan mandates that all trucks entering Gaza undergo Israeli inspections. This measure aims to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need while maintaining security protocols.

Impact on Displaced Palestinians

During the first phase of the ceasefire, Israeli troops are expected to withdraw into a buffer zone approximately one kilometre wide inside Gaza along its borders with Israel. This move will allow many displaced Palestinians to return home, including those from Gaza City and northern Gaza.

With most of Gaza's population living in overcrowded tent camps, there is a strong desire among Palestinians to return home despite widespread destruction. The ceasefire offers hope for some normalcy amidst ongoing challenges.

Background of Conflict

The conflict began with a Hamas-led attack on October 7 that resulted in around 1,200 deaths and left approximately 250 people captive. Nearly 100 hostages remain in Gaza. In response, Israel launched an offensive that has killed over 46,000 Palestinians according to local health officials.

The ongoing violence has taken a heavy toll on both sides, with women and children making up more than half of the Palestinian casualties reported by health officials.

As efforts continue towards peace and stability, it remains crucial for all parties involved to adhere to agreements made during negotiations. The path forward requires cooperation and commitment from both sides to ensure lasting peace in the region.
