Canada's Ambassador Discusses Importance of Trudeau's Dinner with Trump for Tariff Negotiations

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau successfully conveyed to President-elect Donald Trump and his key Cabinet nominees that equating Canada with Mexico regarding drug and migrant flow into the US is unjust. Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador in Washington, highlighted this after a significant dinner meeting between Trudeau and Trump. The dinner aimed to dissuade Trump from imposing tariffs on Canadian products.

Trudeaus Dinner with Trump and Tariff Talks

Hillman, who was present at Mar-a-Lago during the meeting, noted that Trudeau's request to meet Trump was made over a phone call earlier that week. During the dinner, Trudeau emphasised the stark differences between the Canada-US and Mexico-US borders. "The message that our border is so vastly different than the Mexican border was really understood," Hillman stated.

Border Security and Trade Concerns

The discussion primarily revolved around Trump's border concerns. Hillman stressed that there is virtually no fentanyl trafficking from Canada to the US. She pointed out that 99.8% of fentanyl seized by US authorities originates from Mexico. Additionally, illegal crossings from Canada account for only 0.6% of total interceptions.

US customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared to 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. In October alone, the US Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border, while 23,721 arrests occurred at the Canadian border over a year. Hillman mentioned that migrant numbers have been decreasing since summer.

Canada is prepared to enhance its border security with investments in helicopters, drones, and additional law enforcement officers. An agreement exists between Canada and the US to return migrants caught crossing illegally into the US back to Canada. This arrangement does not exist between Mexico and the US.

Trade Deficit Discussions

The dinner also addressed America's trade deficit with Canada. Hillman noted that last year, the US had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada. However, she highlighted that a third of Canada's exports to the US are energy-related, with prices being high. "Trade balances are something that he focuses on so it's important to engage in that conversation but to put it into context," Hillman explained.

Hillman added that if Trump's metric is a balanced trade deal per capita, Canada would be buying ten times more from the US than vice versa. The dinner included several notable figures such as Howard Lutnick, Doug Burgum, Mike Waltz, David McCormick, Dina Powell, Dominic LeBlanc, and Katie Telford.

Trump described the talks as "productive" in a social media post but did not indicate any change in his tariff stance. Hillman mentioned that Trump and Trudeau share a good rapport and used the dinner as an opportunity for socialising. Trump even expressed his admiration for Canadian singer Celine Dion during their interaction.

Canadian officials will continue working with incoming Trump administration members on these issues in upcoming weeks. While no immediate resolution on tariffs was expected, Hillman acknowledged that progress was made in understanding each other's perspectives during this meeting.
