California University Head Suspended for Unapproved Pro-Palestinian Pact

In a significant development within the California State University (CSU) system, Sonoma State University President Ming-Tung "Mike" Lee has been placed on administrative leave. This decision came after Lee announced an agreement with pro-Palestinian activists to engage in an academic boycott of Israeli institutions and explore "divestment strategies," a move that was made "without the appropriate approvals," according to Mildred García, chancellor of the 23-campus CSU system.

Uni President Suspended for Pact

The controversy arose from a statement issued by President Lee, which was intended to address student activism and dissent regarding Israel's actions in the conflict with Hamas. However, García highlighted that this action was taken without the necessary consent, leading to Lee's suspension. In response to the backlash, Lee issued an apology for the unintended consequences of his announcement, acknowledging that it had marginalized other members of the student population and community.

Lee's original message had emphasized support for student activism and the establishment of an Advisory Council of Students for Justice in Palestine at Sonoma State. He also announced plans to review all university foundation investments and vendor contracts with the aim of implementing divestment strategies that seek ethical alternatives. Furthermore, Lee stated that Sonoma State would not pursue or engage in any study abroad programs, faculty exchanges, or other formal collaborations sponsored by or representing Israeli state academic and research institutions. However, he clarified that engagement with individual Israeli scholars acting in a personal capacity would still be welcome.

The incident has sparked a debate on academic freedom, the role of university administrations in political matters, and the impact of such decisions on campus communities. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this will affect relations within the CSU system and its stance on international issues.
