Bulgarian National Charged with Spying for Russia in the UK
A Bulgarian national living in England has been charged with conspiring with five other Bulgarians to spy for Russia. The group is accused of conducting surveillance on behalf of Russia, with coordination taking place in the UK.
In a recent development, British authorities have charged another Bulgarian national residing in England with conspiring to spy for Russia. This individual, identified as Tihomir Ivanchev, is part of a group of six Bulgarians who are currently in custody and are alleged to be involved in a network conducting surveillance on behalf of Russia.

Surveillance Activities and Coordination
While much of the group's activities took place abroad, prosecutors have revealed that coordination occurred within the United Kingdom. Ivanchev, who is 38 years old and resided in west London, is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to face charges of conspiracy to conduct espionage between August 2020 and February 2023.
Arrests and Charges
The other five Bulgarian nationals involved in this case, comprising three men and two women, were apprehended last year on similar charges of "conspiring to collect information intended to be directly or indirectly useful to an enemy," specifically Russia. These individuals are accused of collaborating with Jan Marsalek, an Austrian national who is not charged in the case, as well as other unknown individuals.
Connection to Jan Marsalek
Jan Marsalek, the former chief operating officer of the German payment systems provider Wirecard, is a central figure in this espionage case. Wirecard experienced a significant fraud scandal in 2020, leading to its collapse. Marsalek, considered a key player in the scandal, has been on the run since mid-2020, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.
Upcoming Trial and Previous Arrests
The other five Bulgarian nationals involved in this case, namely Orlin Roussev (46), Bizer Dzhambazov (42), Katrin Ivanova and Ivan Stoyanov (both 32), and Vanya Gaberova (29), are scheduled to face trial in October. The trial is expected to be extensive, with an estimated duration of four months.
It is worth noting that Roussev, Dzhambazov, and Ivanova had previously been arrested in February on suspicion of possessing false identification documents. During a court appearance in July, prosecutors revealed that they had discovered 34 ID documents, some of which were suspected to be counterfeit, originating from various countries, including the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, and the Czech Republic.
The ongoing investigation into this espionage network highlights the efforts of British authorities to combat foreign interference and protect national security. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation in addressing potential threats to the country's interests.
