BRICS 2024: PM Narendra Modi And Chinese President Xi Jinping To Hold Bilateral Meeting On Wednesday
On the sidelines of 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet formally for the first time in 5 years. India and China top leaders meeting was official announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri today in a press briefing. PM Modi and Jinping's meet highlights the importance of this engagement between the leaders of two neighboring powers with a complex relationship. Though the exact time of the meeting is yet to be announced, the anticipation around it underscores the potential impact on bilateral relations.
The backdrop to this meeting is a recent agreement between India and China to resume patrolling at the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This area has been a point of contention following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, which marked a severe downturn in diplomatic relations. The clash was the most serious military conflict between the two nations in decades, leading to a significant strain in ties. Despite some disengagement at various friction points, a complete resolution of the border row remains elusive.

Bilateral Meeting Confirmed
"I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting held between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit," stated Vikram Misri, shedding light on the planned high-level dialogue. This statement was made in Kazan, Russia, indicating the international interest in this bilateral interaction. The engagement is noteworthy, considering the last formal meeting between Modi and Xi took place in October 2019, in Mahabalipuram.
The confirmation of this meeting arrives just a day after both nations revealed an agreement to resume patrolling in disputed border areas, signaling a potential thaw in relations. The Chinese side also acknowledged a resolution on "relevant matters" and expressed its commitment to work with India towards implementing these resolutions. This dialogue represents a continuation of efforts to address the longstanding border disputes that have characterized Sino-Indian relations, particularly since the tense standoff that began in May 2020.
India has consistently asserted that normalcy in its relationship with China is contingent upon peace along the border areas. The Galwan Valley incident, which resulted in casualties on both sides, has been a major sticking point in diplomatic conversations. The upcoming meeting between Modi and Xi thus carries the weight of these historical tensions, along with the hope for progress in resolving the complex issues at hand.
In conclusion, the scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Brics Summit offers a pivotal moment for Sino-Indian relations. As both countries navigate the intricacies of their border disputes and seek to mend ties frayed by military conflict, the world watches closely. This dialogue could mark a significant step towards peace and cooperation between two of the world's most populous and powerful nations.
