Bolsonaro Supporter Gets 17-Year Sentence for Role in Violent Uprising
The Brazilian Supreme Court has sentenced Aécio Lúcio Costa Pereira, a supporter of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, to 17 years imprisonment. He was found guilty of five crimes including staging a coup and violent attack on the rule of law during an uprising aimed at restoring Bolsonaro to office.
On September 14, Brazil's Supreme Court sentenced a supporter of the former President Jair Bolsonaro to a prison term of 17 years. The individual in question, Aécio Lúcio Costa Pereira, was involved in storming top government offices on January 8 as part of an alleged attempt to forcefully restore the right-wing leader to office. This ruling marks the first sentencing for several participants involved in this uprising.
The Uprising and Arrest

Pereira, aged 51, was apprehended by police on the day of the riot itself. In a telling instance captured by Senate cameras in January, he was filmed wearing a shirt advocating for a military coup while recording himself praising others who had also breached into the building. The upheaval saw almost 1,500 people being detained on that day alone; however, most have since been released.
The Verdict and Charges
In their verdict against Pereira, the majority of the court’s eleven justices ruled that he had committed five crimes: criminal association; staging a coup; violent attack on rule of law; qualified damage; and destruction of public assets. Consequently, they handed him a sentence amounting to 17 years behind bars.
Denial Of Wrongdoing
Pereira has denied any wrongdoing and maintains his stance that he participated in what he describes as "a peaceful demonstration" involving unarmed individuals. However, this claim stands starkly contrasted by his documented actions during these tumultuous events.
Political Context
The riots were fueled primarily by supporters refusing to accept Bolsonaro's defeat at hands of leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or 'Lula', whose inauguration took place just one week before this uprising occurred. It is worth noting that Lula is not a newcomer to the political landscape of Brazil, having governed the country between.
In conclusion, this sentence marks a significant development in Brazil's efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the January 8th uprising. While Pereira is the first participant to be prosecuted, it remains unclear how many more will face similar charges and potential prison sentences in relation to these events. This case underscores an ongoing struggle within Brazilian society over political ideologies and power dynamics, with implications that extend far beyond its borders.
