Over 139 Seek Medical Help in Russia Due to Botulism, Salads May Be Culprit
In a concerning development, at least 139 individuals across Russia have reported symptoms consistent with botulism, a rare but serious illness triggered by a toxin from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This outbreak has been potentially linked to the consumption of ready-to-eat salads. The majority of these cases, 121 to be precise, were reported in Moscow, as stated by the city's deputy mayor, Anastasia Rakova. She highlighted that out of these, 55 people are in a critical condition, with 30 requiring intensive care treatment.

Botulism is known for its severe impact on the human body, causing symptoms such as intense abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision, dry mouth, and difficulty in swallowing or speaking. In more severe cases, it can lead to paralysis, breathing difficulties, and even death if not treated promptly. The illness is typically associated with improperly canned, preserved, or fermented foods.
Further reports came from Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, where 12 and six individuals respectively sought medical help for suspected botulism. In Nizhny Novgorod, nine were reported to be in serious condition. Health officials have tentatively linked some of these cases to two brands of ready-made salads. Following these reports, Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's public health watchdog, has temporarily halted the sale of these salads as part of an ongoing investigation initiated on Saturday after the initial poisoning reports emerged.
A popular food delivery service known as Kukhnya Na Rayone, which operates in Moscow, Kazan, and several other cities, was found to have one of the implicated salads on its menu. The service announced a suspension of operations over the weekend. Through an online statement, it confirmed the removal of the salad containing canned beans from its menu and pledged to conduct thorough inspections of its other food offerings.
The health departments in Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod have indicated that those hospitalized in their cities had consumed salads prepared by Kukhnya Na Rayone. However, authorities have yet to confirm if the salads were indeed contaminated with the botulism toxin. Amidst these alarming developments, a criminal investigation has been launched to ascertain the source of the outbreak and prevent further cases.
