Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suggested that the UK and its European allies should send noncombat troops to Ukraine. This move aims to demonstrate to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Western nations are committed to Ukraine's freedom. Johnson shared these views in an interview with the BBC, highlighting the importance of deploying troops to peaceful areas in non-fighting roles.

Johnson's proposal, if implemented, would represent a significant policy change for the UK and its allies. The plan involves sending troops to Ukraine after a ceasefire agreement is reached, with the intention of maintaining peace. Johnson questioned why such a deployment should wait for a ceasefire, arguing that it would give Putin control over the situation.

Western Allies' Concerns

Western military planners have been cautious about discussing troop deployment publicly. They fear Russia might interpret it as an escalation. In September, Putin dismissed Western proposals for peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, stating that any foreign troops would be considered legitimate targets.

Johnson emphasized that Putin shouldn't dictate terms to Ukraine and its allies. He stated, "It's about whether Ukraine is a free country or not." He argued that if Ukraine is not a vassal state of Russia, then Ukrainians should decide who enters their country.

Historical Context and Implications

The former Prime Minister linked the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to past Western failures. He cited the West's inability to support Ukraine after Crimea's annexation in 2014 and its failure to punish Syria's Bashar al-Assad for using chemical weapons. Johnson also mentioned the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan as factors emboldening Putin.

"I think Putin was emboldened by a Western failure in Syria to punish Assad for using chemical weapons," Johnson said. He added that the images of Americans fleeing Afghanistan contributed to this perception of Western weakness.

UK Government's Position

The UK's Ministry of Defence responded to Johnson's comments by stating that they are working with allies on plans for troop deployment post-ceasefire. The ministry emphasized that British troops would be deployed under UK leadership to ensure long-term peace once hostilities end.

The ministry stated, "The multinational force under UK leadership will secure peace for the long term." The Prime Minister has made it clear that British troops will be on the ground after hostilities cease.

Johnson remains one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters since the conflict began. His recent comments reflect his continued commitment to advocating for Ukraine's independence and sovereignty against Russian aggression.
