Surge in Requests for Birth Control and Abortion Pills Following Trump's Election

Following Donald Trump's re-election, Dr. Clayton Alfonso received messages from patients wanting to replace their IUDs. Within days, three women asked about sterilisation procedures, citing the election as their reason. Nationwide, requests for long-term birth control and permanent sterilisation have surged. Companies selling emergency contraception and abortion pills report significant increases in demand, with one experiencing a 966% rise in emergency contraception sales shortly after the election.

Increase in Birth Control and Abortion Pill Requests

Dr. Alfonso, an OB-GYN at Duke University, noted a similar trend after Trump's 2016 election and the overturning of Roe vs Wade in 2022. However, he observed that patients seem more fearful this time. Despite anti-abortion advocates urging Trump to impose more restrictions on abortion pills, it's uncertain what actions will be taken regarding contraceptive access during his second term.

Contraceptive Concerns Amid Political Changes

Trump expressed openness to supporting contraception regulations in a May interview but later clarified on Truth Social that he has never advocated for restricting birth control. Dr. Alfonso's patients are eager to replace effective IUDs to reset their lifespan before the inauguration. Concerns about IUDs stem from opposition by those who believe life begins at fertilisation, although experts say IUDs primarily prevent fertilisation.

Pittsburgh OB-GYN Dr. Grace Ferguson reported increased appointments for IUD insertions and emergency contraception stockpiling due to the upcoming administration change. Patient Mara Zupko seeks prescription emergency contraception because she's near the weight limit for Plan B, while her husband plans a vasectomy.

Rising Demand for Emergency Contraception

Women are increasingly turning to online companies for emergency contraception and abortion pills like mifepristone and misoprostol via telehealth services. This trend began before the election but has accelerated since then. A study showed Aid Access received around 48,400 requests for "advance provision" pills from September 2021 to April 2023, peaking after Roe's overturning news leaked.

Mifepristone has a five-year shelf life, while misoprostol lasts about two years, according to Plan C, which provides information on medical abortions. Plan B typically lasts four years. Telehealth company Wisp saw a 600% spike in abortion pill orders between Election Day and the following day. From November 6 to 11, Wisp experienced a 460% increase in sales of emergency contraception and birth control products.

Understanding Emergency Contraception

Winx Health, targeting Gen Z with its Restart emergency contraception, reported a 966% sales increase within 60 hours post-election compared to the previous week. Sales of Restart "value packs," containing four doses instead of one, surged over 7,000% in the past week. Morning-after pills remain legal nationwide, but Winx co-founder Cynthia Plotch noted confusion between emergency contraception and abortion pills.

A KFF poll found most respondents understood these are different; however, only 27% knew emergency contraceptive pills can't terminate a pregnancy. Doctors believe this confusion may partly explain stockpiling but suspect many seek longer-term birth control to prevent pregnancy and avoid abortion.

Dr. Alfonso anticipates that the surge in demand for birth control and abortion pills might stabilise as it did in 2016 and 2022. He suggests if the new administration doesn't prioritise healthcare immediately, public concern may diminish until media coverage reignites interest.
