Biden Issues Warning About Oligarchy as Trump Welcomes Tech Billionaires at Inauguration

President Joe Biden has issued a stark warning about the potential transformation of the United States into an "oligarchy" dominated by tech billionaires. This concern will be highlighted at Donald Trump's upcoming inauguration, where the world's three richest men will be present as Trump takes the oath for a second term. Elon Musk, the wealthiest individual globally, played a significant role in Trump's campaign, contributing around USD 200 million through a super PAC.

Biden Warns of Oligarchy at Trump Inauguration

Musk's involvement extends beyond financial support, as he is set to influence government operations in the new administration. Joining him on the dais will be Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos. Both Musk and Bezos have substantial contracts with the federal government. Completing this trio is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has recently aligned his company's priorities with Trump's agenda.

Tech Billionaires and Political Influence

The combined wealth of Musk, Bezos, and Zuckerberg approaches USD 1 trillion. They will be accompanied at the inauguration by CEOs from OpenAI and TikTok. Notably, TikTok faces a shutdown in the U.S. due to a new law opposed by Trump. Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have each contributed $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund.

The influence of wealthy individuals in politics is not new. Several billionaires supported Trump's Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden recently awarded George Soros, a billionaire donor to liberal causes, the presidential medal of freedom. However, the upcoming inauguration underscores an unusually direct involvement of billionaires in the incoming administration.

Wealth Inequality in America

Wealth inequality in the U.S. has slightly decreased during Biden's term but remains historically high. The wealthiest 0.1% of Americans own nearly 14% of the nation's wealth, amounting to over USD 22 trillion in various assets. In contrast, the bottom half of the population holds just 2.4% of wealth, or under USD 4 trillion.

A notable development is the immense wealth amassed by a few hundred billionaires in the country. Musk's net worth stands at USD 450 billion, followed by Bezos at USD 242 billion and Zuckerberg at USD 212 billion. These figures highlight their unprecedented financial status.

Efforts to Address Wealth Disparity

The escalating affluence has prompted Democrats to seek changes in tax policies targeting wealth. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren proposed a wealth tax during her 2020 presidential campaign. Although unsuccessful, similar efforts were made in ten states last year to introduce wealth taxes.

Some Democratic-leaning states have implemented higher taxes on individuals earning over $1 million annually to tackle income inequality.

Trump and his allies position themselves as champions for ordinary citizens, aiming to reclaim power from elites and interest groups. Despite being a billionaire himself, Trump promotes a form of populism focused on wealthy entrepreneurs liberating lower and middle classes from intellectual elites.

During Scott Bessent's confirmation hearing for Treasury Secretary, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders highlighted wealth inequality and questioned if an oligarchy is forming in America. Bessent responded that billionaires earn their fortunes independently.

The dynamics within Trump's administration reflect a complex relationship between political power and immense wealth, raising questions about future governance and economic policies in the U.S., especially concerning tech moguls' roles in shaping national agendas.
