Biden Declines to Support Israeli Military Action Against Iran's Nuclear Facilities Amid Escalating Tensions

President Joe Biden has stated he will not endorse an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites following Iran's missile attack on Israel. When asked about supporting such retaliation, Biden replied, "The answer is no." This response came after Iran launched approximately 180 missiles at Israel. Biden's comments followed a call with Group of Seven leaders, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK, to discuss new sanctions against Iran.

Biden Opposes Israeli Strike on Iran Nuclear Sites

The US and its allies are working to prevent the Middle East conflict from escalating further. The conflict was ignited by Hamas militants' attack on Israel on 7 October. They are urging Israel to exercise caution in its response to Iran's recent attack. Currently, Israel is conducting limited ground operations along its northern border with Lebanon. These operations aim to target Hezbollah, another group supported by Iran.

G7 Leaders Condemn Iran's Actions

The White House released a statement indicating that G7 leaders strongly condemned Iran's attack on Israel. Biden reaffirmed America's unwavering support for Israel and its citizens. He also emphasized Israel's right to self-defense and mentioned that certain actions must be taken in response to the Iranian missile barrage. Biden anticipates that G7 nations will soon announce sanctions against Iran.

Israel is believed to have been behind an attack last month involving explosives hidden in pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah. This incident resulted in numerous casualties and injuries among civilians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently considering various options for responding to the recent attack. These options range from symbolic strikes to targeting oil facilities and infrastructure.

Concerns Over Regional Conflict

Biden expressed concerns that targeting Iran's nuclear program could provoke a broader regional conflict. He believes such actions could further inflame tensions in the Middle East. The Italian Premier's office issued a statement highlighting the leaders' strong concern over the recent escalation and stressed that a regional conflict benefits no one.

Biden plans to speak with Netanyahu soon regarding the situation. His administration has urged Israel to show restraint in its response to Iran's missile attack, which Biden described as "ineffective and defeated." The US military assisted Israel in defending against this attack, which was a retaliation for the killing of Tehran-backed Hezbollah leaders.

Diplomatic Discussions Continue

Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell emphasized the importance of sending a message back to Iran while acknowledging the delicate balance in the region. He noted ongoing discussions between US and Israeli officials regarding their response. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also engaged in talks with his counterparts from Britain, France, Germany, and Italy about the Middle East situation.

As events unfold, it remains crucial for all parties involved to navigate these tensions carefully to avoid further escalation in the region.
