Biden Authorises Ukraine to Deploy Longer-Range US Weapons for Strikes Inside Russia

The United States has agreed to let Ukraine use American-supplied longer-range weapons for strikes deeper into Russian territory. This decision fulfills a long-standing request from Kyiv. However, it remains uncertain if there are restrictions on Ukraine's use of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), similar to limitations placed on other US missile systems.

Biden Allows Ukraine to Use US Weapons in Russia

President Joe Biden has authorised Ukraine to utilise ATACMS for deeper strikes inside Russia. This decision comes amid North Korea's move to send troops to support Russian forces. Pyongyang's troops are reportedly aiding the Russian army in pushing Ukrainian forces out of Russia's Kursk border region, where an incursion occurred in August.

Longer-Range Weapons and Strategic Impact

The ATACMS missiles, developed by Lockheed Martin, have a striking range of up to 300 kilometres. This is nearly double the range of most weapons currently available to Ukraine. The US has supplied Ukraine with dozens of these missiles, which have been used against military targets in Russian-occupied areas like Crimea, but not on Russian soil.

Ukraine has been urging Western allies for longer-range weapons to shift the power balance in the war. These weapons aim to target air bases, supply depots, and communication centres far across the border. They could help weaken Russia's air power and disrupt its supply lines needed for daily strikes against Ukraine.

Potential Limitations and Concerns

The deployment of these missiles might initially be restricted to Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces seized territory earlier this year. If used there, they could force Russian forces to reposition valuable equipment and manpower, complicating their battle plans.

Despite the potential benefits, US officials have expressed doubts about whether the ATACMS will significantly alter the conflict. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated, "I don't believe one capability is going to be decisive," highlighting that Ukraine has other means for long-range strikes.

Political Implications and Future Prospects

The decision comes as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office. Trump has promised a swift end to the war, raising concerns about potential concessions from Kyiv. The recent American election also casts uncertainty over how long this policy will remain in place.

The Kremlin has warned that this move adds "fuel to the fire." If strikes are permitted across all of Russia, it could complicate Moscow's ability to respond effectively on the battlefield. However, if limited to Kursk, Russia might relocate its command centres and air units nearby.

Ukraine has been cautious about announcing this development. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked, "The rockets will speak for themselves," indicating that actions will follow words. Analysts suggest that while impactful, the effect may be limited due to Russia moving key assets out of range.

Pentagon spokesman Lt Col Charlie Dietz noted that ATACMS wouldn't address the main threat from Russian-fired glide bombs. Additionally, the supply of these missiles is limited, leading US officials to question if enough can be provided to make a significant impact.

While it's unclear what restrictions might apply or how many missiles will be supplied, Ukraine continues its efforts with domestically produced weapons capable of reaching up to 1,000 kilometres. However, they lack sufficient quantities for sustained impact.
