U.S. Grants Temporary Legal Status to Afghan Migrants Amid Ongoing Crisis in Afghanistan
The Department of Homeland Security announced that around 14,600 Afghans who arrived between March 15, 2022, and September 20, 2023 will be given Temporary Protected Status until 2025. This doesn't provide a path to citizenship but protects them from deportation and allows them to work in the country.
The Biden administration has announced its decision to grant temporary legal status to Afghan migrants who have been residing in the United States for over a year. This move is aimed at providing protection and work rights to these individuals, albeit temporarily.
Temporary Protected Status for Afghan Migrants

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made the announcement on Thursday, stating that this Temporary Protected Status (TPS) would be extended to Afghans who arrived in the country between March 15, 2022 and September 20, 2023. The DHS estimates that approximately 14,600 Afghans will benefit from this decision.
It’s important to note that this TPS does not confer upon these Afghans any long-term right to reside in the US or provide them with a pathway towards gaining citizenship. It merely protects them from deportation till 2025 when it would need renewal. However, it does permit them legally to seek employment within the country.
Afghan Migrants: A Deserving Group
Although only a relatively small number of people are impacted by this decision - compared with nearly half a million Venezuelans granted TPS on Thursday - many among those affected had taken significant risks to reach American shores after exhausting all other options available for escaping Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
Supporters argue that these individuals deserve protection considering their circumstances and hardships they endured while fleeing their homeland under severe conditions. Eskinder Negash commented on the situation saying "Today's decision is a clear recognition of the ongoing country conditions in Afghanistan which have continued to deteriorate under Taliban rule."
Biden Administration's Stance on Immigration
This move reflects Biden administration's more compassionate stance towards immigration issues compared with its predecessor Trump administration which was known for its hardline policies against illegal immigrants. The decision also showcases the administration's recognition of the dire situation in Afghanistan following Taliban's takeover and its commitment to provide some form of relief to those who managed to escape.
In conclusion, while this temporary protection does not solve all problems faced by Afghan migrants in the US, it does offer them a respite from fear of deportation and allows them an opportunity to earn their livelihood legally. It is indeed a step forward towards acknowledging and addressing their plight. However, more comprehensive solutions are needed for providing long-term stability and security to these individuals who have left everything behind in search of safety and better opportunities.
