Bangladesh's First Reaction On Mamata Banerjee’s 'Shelter' Offer: 'Good Ties, But Concerns Remain'

The Bangladesh government issued a note to the Indian government in response to statements, on Tuesday.

The response from Bangladesh came after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, suggested offering shelter to "helpless people" from Bangladesh.

According to local media, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud expressed concerns that Banerjee's remarks might create confusion and mislead people. Hasan Mahmud commented, "With due respect to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, we have excellent relations with her. However, her remarks have created some confusion and could potentially mislead," as reported by United News of Bangladesh.

The remarks came a day after Mamata Banerjee made the statement during the Trinamool Congress (TMC) annual Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata. Banerjee offered shelter to people from Bangladesh, which has been experiencing violent student-led protests over a controversial reservation system in its civil services, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Banerjee had stated, "I should not speak on the affairs of Bangladesh as it is a sovereign nation, and the Centre is responsible for such matters. However, if helpless people come knocking on our doors, we will surely provide them shelter." She also urged Bangladeshi citizens not to be provoked by the situation in their country.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose criticized Banerjee's comments and reminded the state government that the Centre handles external affairs. The Raj Bhavan in Kolkata has requested a report from the Chief Minister regarding her statement, as per media reports.

In Bangladesh, violent clashes between police and predominantly student protesters have occurred, with over 130 reported deaths amid demonstrations against a quota system that reserved 30% of government jobs for veterans' relatives from the 1971 War of Independence. A curfew was imposed, and the Army was deployed throughout the country. On Monday, Bangladesh's Supreme Court reduced the controversial quota system, addressing a key demand of the protesters.
