Bangladesh's Growing Bond With Pakistan: A New Challenge For India's Regional Strategy

The recent D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation summit in Cairo has raised eyebrows in New Delhi, with a notable bilateral meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bangladesh's interim leader Mohammad Yunus.

While the summit was intended to focus on economic cooperation among member nations such as Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the spotlight shifted to the growing camaraderie between Dhaka and Islamabad, as reported by India.com

Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties Strengthens

During the bilateral discussions, Shehbaz Sharif disclosed several measures reflecting a newfound ease in relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh:

  • Simplified Trade Practices: Goods arriving in Bangladesh from Pakistan are now exempt from physical inspections, streamlining trade procedures.
  • Eased Travel Restrictions: Security measures for Pakistani nationals at Dhaka airport, including a dedicated security desk, have been removed. Visa processing has also been simplified, fostering greater mobility.
  • Cultural and Educational Exchange: Both leaders agreed to enhance ties through cultural programs, sports collaborations, and academic exchanges. Increased student mobility between the two countries is also on the agenda.

Sharif highlighted symbolic gestures of this growing bond, such as a recent visit by the Bangladeshi cricket team to Pakistan and a concert by a Pakistani music band in Dhaka.

What This Means for India

India has historically enjoyed close ties with Bangladesh, but the recent developments suggest a possible shift in Dhaka's strategic priorities. This growing alignment with Pakistan poses significant concerns for India:

  • Border Security Risks: India has traditionally maintained less stringent security along its border with Bangladesh compared to its heavily guarded frontier with Pakistan. A closer Pakistan-Bangladesh partnership could potentially allow Pakistan-backed elements to exploit this vulnerability.
  • Geopolitical Implications: Bangladesh's pivot towards Pakistan may alter the regional balance, complicating India's strategic and diplomatic efforts in South Asia.

A Wake-Up Call for India?

The deepening of Pakistan-Bangladesh relations signals a potential challenge for India's regional influence. While the motives behind this shift remain multifaceted, it is clear that India must reassess its approach towards its eastern neighbour to safeguard its interests in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
