Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission Members Resign Following Report on Rising Mob Violence

On Thursday, all members of Bangladesh's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) resigned, three months after the interim government assumed control. The NHRC chairman, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, along with five other members, submitted their resignation letters to the president, as reported by BDNews24.com.

Resignations at Bangladesh Human Rights Commission

The resignations followed the release of a report by the commission that highlighted an increase in mob violence across the country. The full-time members who resigned include Md Salim Reza, Aminul Islam, Kongjari Chowdhury, Biswajit Chanda, and Tania Haque. These members were appointed by former president Md Abdul Hamid in December 2022.

Resignations Amid Political Turmoil

Significant changes have occurred in various government departments since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's unexpected resignation on August 5. Hasina stepped down and left for India after facing widespread protests against her Awami League-led administration due to a contentious job quota system.

BDNews24.com quoted Yusha Rahman, the commission’s spokesperson, who confirmed the resignations. However, when asked about the reason behind them, Rahman stated, "I am unaware of the reason." The resignations came just two days after the NHRC released its monthly report documenting a rise in crimes like mob beatings and rapes in October.

Rising Communal Tensions

The NHRC's report also detailed incidents of political harassment and assaults on political leaders. Following Hasina's resignation, communal tensions escalated in Bangladesh. Over 2,000 attacks against the minority Hindu community have been reported since then.

The recent upheaval within governmental bodies and the NHRC underscores the ongoing instability in Bangladesh's political landscape. The resignations of key figures within the NHRC add another layer of complexity to the situation as the interim government navigates these challenges.
