Bangladesh: Key Student Leader Nahid Islam Resigns From Interim Government, Set To Launch New Political Party

In a major political development, Nahid Islam, one of the prominent student leaders who played a key role in last year's uprising that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has resigned from Muhammad Yunus's interim government. Islam is now poised to launch a new political party on February 28.

The announcement was made by the Jatio Nagorik Committee, a platform representing the student group that spearheaded the July 2024 uprising. "After the July 2024 uprising, new hopes and aspirations were born in Bangladesh. In light of those aspirations, the students have taken the initiative to form a new political party," said Samanta Shermeen, spokesperson for the committee.

The July 2024 uprising marked a turning point in Bangladesh's political trajectory, with widespread student-led protests calling for democratic reforms and an end to what they described as decades of state oppression. The protests culminated in the resignation of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024, paving the way for an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

"Since the national unification during the uprising, we have realized that the ideologies of the existing political parties do not represent all the people of the country. The existing state structure is absolutely not capable of making Bangladesh a modern state. We want to build Bangladesh into a modern and important country in South Asia, connecting people across the world and adding new ideas," Shermeen added.

Islam's resignation comes amid mounting criticism from Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other political factions, who argue that forming a political party while retaining government positions undermines the spirit of the uprising. Meanwhile, the Awami League has largely remained silent, with many of its leaders either jailed or in hiding following the unrest.

Shermeen clarified that Dr. Yunus's interim government does not represent any political party, including the Jamat or the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). "Dr. Yunus represents the uprising, and all the advisers represent the uprising. They do not represent any political party," she emphasized.

A recent UN fact-finding report indicated that the previous government made concerted efforts to suppress the protests, resulting in retaliatory violence that persisted beyond its downfall. The report estimates that approximately 1,400 lives were lost between July 15 and August 15, making it one of the most tumultuous periods in the country's recent history.
