Investigation Launched Following Death of BNSF Railway Conductor Struck by Train in Montana

Authorities are investigating the death of a BNSF Railway conductor who was struck by a moving train in Columbus, Montana. The National Transportation Safety Board is involved in the inquiry.

A rail conductor tragically lost their life after being struck by a train in Montana on Sunday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The conductor was employed by BNSF Railway, which operates one of the largest freight networks in the United States. The incident took place around 9:40 am in Columbus, a small town located 64 kilometres southwest of Billings.

Emergency response teams were uncertain about the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Nick Jacobs, assistant chief of Columbus Fire Rescue, mentioned that the individual was caught between two trains. One train was stationary on one track while another was moving on a different track. "And the moving one struck him somehow," Jacobs explained.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

The NTSB and Federal Railroad Administration officials were present at the scene to investigate the incident further. A spokesperson for BNSF Railway directed all inquiries to the NTSB for more information. The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed to the public.

Last year, a report by the Federal Railroad Administration highlighted that BNSF Railway was making efforts to enhance safety consistently. However, it noted that this message did not always reach front-line workers. Many employees felt uncomfortable reporting safety issues due to fear of disciplinary action.
