Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer to Resign Following Failed Coalition Government Negotiations

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation after unsuccessful attempts to form a new government. The decision followed the collapse of coalition talks between the People's Party and the Social Democrats. This development came after the liberal Neos party unexpectedly withdrew from discussions, leaving negotiations in disarray.

Nehammer Resigns After Coalition Talks Fail

Nehammer expressed disappointment over the failed negotiations, attributing the breakdown to "destructive forces" within the Social Democratic Party. He stated that the People's Party would not endorse a programme that undermines economic competitiveness. "Unfortunately I have to tell you today that the negotiations have ended and will not be continued by the Peoples Party," he said on social media.

Economic Challenges Ahead

The next Austrian government faces significant financial challenges. According to the EU Commission, it needs to save between 18 to 24 billion euros. Austria has been in a recession for two years, with rising unemployment and a budget deficit at 3.7% of GDP, exceeding the EU's 3% limit.

Social Democratic leader Andreas Babler expressed regret over the People's Party's decision to end talks. "This is not a good decision for our country," he remarked. Babler highlighted that a major issue was addressing the "record deficit" left by the previous administration.

Political Impasse

The coalition discussions had been ongoing since October when Austria's president tasked Nehammer with forming a new government. This request followed other parties' refusal to collaborate with the far-right Freedom Party leader, who won 29.2% of votes in September's national election.

Babler urged Nehammer and the People's Party to reconsider their stance and continue negotiations. "I have offered to Karl Nehammer and the Peoples Party to continue negotiating and called on them not to get up," he told reporters.

The political deadlock leaves Austria in a precarious position as it grapples with economic difficulties and seeks stable governance amid ongoing challenges.
