Armed Militants in Dagestan Target Churches and Police, Resulting in Multiple Fatalities
In a series of coordinated attacks that shook the southern republic of Dagestan, armed militants targeted two Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and a traffic police post, resulting in the tragic loss of lives, including a priest, a church security guard, and at least six police officers. The Russian state news agency Tass reported these violent incidents on Sunday, marking a grim day for the region known for its diverse religious communities.

Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee confirmed the deaths of a Russian Orthodox priest and several police officers, labeling the incidents as "terrorist" attacks. The Dagestan Ministry of Internal Affairs detailed that the assailants opened fire at religious sites in Derbent, a city by the Caspian Sea, before setting them ablaze. Concurrently, an assault on a traffic police post in Makhachkala, the capital city of this predominantly Muslim area, was reported. RIA Novosti disclosed that this attack resulted in six policemen dead and 12 wounded.
Shamil Khadulaev, deputy chairman of the public monitoring commission of Dagestan, shared with RIA Novosti that the attacks claimed nine lives in total, including seven policemen, and left 25 individuals injured. The Dagestan Ministry of Internal Affairs also announced that four militants involved in these attacks were neutralized in Makhachkala.
Despite the immediate commencement of a search operation for the attackers, no group has yet claimed responsibility for these heinous acts. However, some Dagestani officials have pointed fingers towards Ukraine and NATO. Abdulkhakim Gadzhiyev, a Dagestan lawmaker, expressed on Telegram his conviction that these terrorist acts are connected to the intelligence services of Ukraine and NATO countries. This allegation has yet to see a response from Ukrainian officials.
President Ramzan Kadyrov of Chechnya commented on the situation as well, describing it as "a vile provocation" aimed at sowing discord among different religious communities. The attacks have not only resulted in loss of life but also threaten to destabilize the delicate interfaith harmony within the region.
The incidents in Dagestan underscore the volatile security situation in Russia's southern republics, where religious and ethnic tensions have historically simmered. As investigations continue and authorities seek to bring those responsible to justice, these attacks serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Russia's efforts to maintain peace and security within its diverse communities.
