Argentina Unites in Prayer for Pope Francis' Recovery from Serious Lung Infection
Over the weekend, Buenos Aires' iconic Obelisco displayed the message, "Francis, the city prays for you." This was as Catholics across Argentina gathered in churches to pray for Pope Francis. The pope, originally from Argentina, is in critical condition with a severe lung infection at a Rome hospital since February 14.

The Vatican's latest update on Sunday stated that Pope Francis remains conscious but requires "high flows" of supplemental oxygen. He experienced a respiratory crisis and needed blood transfusions. His health has prompted global prayers for his recovery, with heightened concern in Argentina, where he served as a bishop before becoming pope in 2013.
Pope Francis' Impact and Support
Catholic priest Lorenzo de Vedia highlighted Francis' influence during a Saturday evening mass in Buenos Aires. De Vedia remarked that Francis is the "pope who made the Church return to the gospel." He praised Francis for envisioning a church that serves the poor and vulnerable.
Masses dedicated to Francis' health took place throughout Argentina on Sunday. A significant mass is scheduled for Monday at Plaza Constitucion in Buenos Aires. This location holds significance as it is where Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, once interacted with people affected by Argentina's economic challenges.
Global Messages of Support
Leaders from various regions have sent messages to Pope Francis. Colombian President Gustavo Petro described him as "a true friend," acknowledging his lifelong dedication to fighting for others. On Saturday, Francis expressed gratitude on X, formerly known as Twitter, for the support he received worldwide.
"I have recently received many messages of affection and I have been especially struck by the letters and drawings from children. Thank you for your closeness and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!" he wrote.
Despite not returning to Argentina since becoming pope, Francis' influence remains strong there. His dedication to serving those in need continues to inspire many, reflecting his commitment to a church focused on compassion and service.
