Apple Initiates Testing of AI Software to Enhance Siri for iPhone 16 Users
Apple is expanding the opportunity for users to test a software update that integrates artificial intelligence into Siri, its virtual assistant. This update aims to automate various tasks on the latest iPhone models, which will be available from Friday. The update was released on Thursday for those who have signed up to test Apple's software before its wider release to all iPhone users next month.

The AI features are currently compatible only with two premium iPhones released last year, but this will change with the launch of four new iPhone 16 models. These models, priced between $800 and $1,200, are equipped with the necessary technology to support the AI features branded as "Apple Intelligence." This branding differentiates Apple's AI from similar technologies in Samsung and Google smartphones.
AI Features and Global Expansion
Initially, the AI technology is available only in US English. However, Apple plans to expand it to localised English versions in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK by December. Further expansion into other languages and countries is expected next year. The AI testing follows the recent release of Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 18.
Once users install the iOS 18.1 upgrade, Siri is expected to become more conversational and versatile. A glowing light will rotate around the screen as Siri responds to requests. Although Siri will perform more tasks and be less prone to confusion, it won't interact with other apps until a future update at an unspecified date.
Additional AI Capabilities
The software update includes AI features for writing and proofreading tasks and summarising emails and documents. It also offers editing tools for photos and simplifies finding old pictures. However, some AI features like creating customised emojis or generating imagery on request are not included in this initial update.
Apple plans to eventually integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT into its AI suite for additional assistance when needed. Besides the new iPhone models, last year's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also support these AI features due to their special computer chips.
Impact on Apple's Market Value
The update enables recording spatial video on two iPhone 15 models for viewing on Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro headset. However, the AI features won't work on many older iPhones still in use. Investors expect this limitation will boost sales of new devices, contributing to a rise in Apple's stock price by over 15% since June.
This increase has added $500 billion in shareholder wealth. Some analysts predict that demand for new iPhones could push Apple's market value above $4 trillion within the next year.
