Apple Agrees to Pay USD 95 Million to Settle Lawsuit Over Siri's Alleged Eavesdropping Practices

Apple has agreed to a USD 95 million settlement to resolve allegations that it used its virtual assistant, Siri, to eavesdrop on users. The lawsuit, filed in an Oakland federal court, accused Apple of secretly activating Siri on iPhones and other devices to record conversations without user consent. These recordings were allegedly shared with advertisers to target consumers with relevant products.

Privacy Concerns and Apple's Stance

The accusations challenge Apple's longstanding commitment to user privacy, a principle frequently emphasized by CEO Tim Cook as a "fundamental human right." Despite agreeing to the settlement, Apple has not admitted any wrongdoing. The settlement awaits approval from US District Judge Jeffrey White, with a hearing proposed for February 14 in Oakland.

Settlement Details and Consumer Compensation

If approved, the settlement will allow millions of iPhone and Apple device owners from September 17, 2014, through the end of last year to file claims. Each claimant could receive up to USD 20 per device equipped with Siri. However, the actual payment may vary based on the number of claims submitted. Consumers can seek compensation for up to five devices.

Financial Implications and Legal Fees

The settlement amount is minor compared to Apple's USD 705 billion profit since September 2014. It is also much less than the estimated USD 1.5 billion Apple might have faced if found guilty of violating privacy laws in a trial. Lawyers involved in the case may request up to USD 29.6 million from the settlement fund for their fees and expenses.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about privacy in technology use. As technology evolves, companies like Apple face scrutiny over how they handle user data and privacy rights.
