Ajit Doval And Wang Yi Strengthen Peace Efforts At LAC To Boost India-China Relations
National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a crucial meeting in Beijing on December 18, 2024.
This was the first meeting between the two officials since tensions flared between India and China in the Western sector in 2020, marking a new chapter in the ongoing dialogue between the two neighbouring countries.

The meeting, which took place as part of the 23rd round of the Special Representatives (SR) talks, came on the heels of discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan. During their talks, both leaders stressed the need for timely discussions to manage peace along the border and to seek a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable solution to the longstanding boundary dispute between India and China.
Focus on Peace and Border Management
During the meeting, Doval and Wang focused primarily on maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas, a theme central to both countries' long-term relationship. Both leaders underscored the necessity of managing the boundary issue in a way that prevents it from impacting broader bilateral relations. They reiterated the importance of viewing the relationship through a political lens that takes into account the long-term vision for India-China ties.
A critical part of their dialogue revolved around ensuring the peaceful resolution of the border dispute. Both Doval and Wang agreed to continue working towards an effective framework for the settlement of the boundary issue, using the diplomatic and military mechanisms available to them. This process, they affirmed, should ensure peace on the ground, creating conditions that allow both countries to develop their relations without border-related concerns hindering progress.
Disengagement and Patrolling Restored
A major breakthrough discussed during the meeting was the successful implementation of disengagement in the Demchok and Depsang areas in October 2024. This disengagement allowed for the resumption of patrolling and grazing in these areas, which has been a key point of tension in recent years. The reaffirmation of these disengagement measures by both leaders sent a clear signal of their commitment to easing border tensions and fostering stability in the region.
Building a Broader Framework for Cooperation
Beyond the border issue, Doval and Wang Yi discussed several other critical areas of cooperation between India and China. They recognized the importance of stable and cooperative relations for peace and prosperity not only in the two countries but also in the broader region and globally.
One of the key points of focus was the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a symbolic and significant pilgrimage for many Indians that has been disrupted due to tensions along the border. Both leaders also agreed on the importance of sharing data on trans-border rivers and enhancing border trade, both of which have been areas of collaboration in the past.
Regional and Global Issues
In addition to bilateral concerns, the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They emphasized the importance of stable relations between India and China for maintaining peace and prosperity in the region. Both leaders expressed their commitment to ensuring that tensions at the border do not overshadow the broader potential for collaboration and development between their countries.
A Step Toward Normalization
NSA Ajit Doval's meeting with Wang Yi represents a positive step towards normalizing relations between India and China. While the road ahead remains challenging, particularly regarding the boundary dispute, the willingness of both leaders to engage in constructive dialogue sets the stage for future cooperation. The ongoing dialogue underscores both nations' desire for a peaceful, stable, and mutually beneficial relationship, one that can contribute to the stability of the entire Asian region.
At the conclusion of the meeting, NSA Doval extended an invitation to Wang Yi to visit India at a mutually convenient time. This visit, when it happens, will mark the continuation of high-level talks and ensure that the Special Representative meeting process remains active and productive.
India and China, two of the world's most populous nations and powerful economies, are crucial to global peace and stability. As both countries continue their efforts to resolve their differences, this meeting highlights the potential for deeper cooperation and a more amicable relationship moving forward.
